Video editing apps are becoming more advanced and more intuitive all the time, and it’s so exciting!
You don’t need a desktop computer to be a YouTube star anymore. Most apps allow you to edit and export straight to social media, and are adding more features and editing precision with every update.
Here are five smart phone apps I recommend for usability and functionality.
1. FilmoraGo
If you are looking for a great beginner editing app, without the heavy features, FilmoraGo for Android gets the job done with a streamlined edit interface – and it’s free!
FilmoraGo is easy to use and it’s ideal for quickly editing simple videos when you’re on the go. It allows you to create videos with music and effects then export straight to social media.
Unlike the other apps in this list it does not support 4K video at this stage, but that won’t be a problem when you’re starting out on your video editing journey.
You can check out FilmoraGo here.
2. iMovie
iMovie is free with new Apple devices, and it’s very user-friendly.
A handy feature is the ability to use iMovie across all of your Apple devices by Airdropping the files from your iPhone, to your iPad, to your Mac. This means you can start editing a project on your phone, send it across to your computer and pick it up right where you left off.
iMovie isn’t the most feature heavy editing platform, but it allows you to create videos quickly and simply with footage, photos, titles, music and some basic graphics. It is ideal for beginners or editors who want to get content out into the world without all the fuss!

3. Adobe Premiere Rush
The Adobe creative suite can be intimidating on desktop, however the smart phone alternative is very user friendly.
The app allows you to cut clips, mix audio and music and create titles with ease. I would say it is the next step up from iMovie or FilmoraGo, and it doesn’t have a steep learning curve if you want to jump in to a slightly more professional editing app.
It contains export presets for YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and other social media sites, and is available for iOS and Android.
It’s free with an Adobe subscription, but costs approximately $15 per month to have the app on its own.
You can check out Premiere Rush here.
4. LumaFusion
6 video and audio tracks, dozens of transitions and title options and an array of colour and audio effects; LumaFusion is possibly the most feature heavy app on the market.
It’s a slightly more advanced editing tool than the others in this list, and one of the most professional editing platforms for smart devices at this stage.
It costs $46.99 and is only available for iOS devices. If you are creating lots of videos for your social platforms primarily using your iPhone or iPad – and want more freedom and options to get creative – LumaFusion is a great option.
You can check out LumaFusion here.
5. KineMaster Pro
Now available for Android and iOS, KineMaster Pro has precise controls for pinpoint video and audio editing. This app is a good option for beginners and professionals.
Some more advanced features include, the ability to add colour LUTs, edit chroma key/greenscreen clips, add 3D transitions and utilise speed controls for time-lapse or slo-mo video.
The app is free to download but will export your videos with a watermark unless you sign up for a monthly or annual subscription, approximately $4.99 per month or $39.99 per year.
You can check out KineMaster Pro here.
