Connect with Your Audience Using One Person

Who are you talking to when you create your videos?

The camera may be the thing you’re physically speaking to, but you are never, ever speaking to just a camera.

If you want to get your message through to your target audience, you have to speak to that person directly.

And I don’t mean all of those people in your target audience, I mean one person.

If you imagine you’re talking to the entire world when you’re trying to sell your story to someone, your message could fall flat. It’s impossible to attract and engage every person who may fit the criteria of a potential client.

Bringing it back down to one person will help you connect more meaningfully with the right people than if you water down your message to suit the masses.

So what does this look like? I’ll tell you a story.

Jamie is a business owner who feels compelled to tell their story, but they don’t quite know how. They want to reach more people, to help more people, but they’re stuck.

They know that video will help them grow their business and change people’s lives, but they’re not sure what to say when they hit the record button. They’ve been working on their message and building their confidence to put themselves out there, but all this technical stuff is just too hard.

They may be considering giving up because it takes so much time to figure out all this video stuff and then it only reaches a handful of people… and most of them are their friends and family.

Jamie feels lost and confused about where to even start, and feels disheartened because this is taking up valuable time they need to be working in their business.

Jamie is my target audience. ‘Jamie’ represents the people I want to help.

I imagine talking to this one person every time I record a video. I believe in this person, and I want them to believe in themselves, in their ideas, and be confident to share their knowledge with the people who need it.

I want Jamie to feel confident in their video skills and be able to make videos they’re proud to share – without it taking up too much of their time doing what they do best in their business.

The idea of talking to one person helps me target my content, my language and my energy, but Jamie represents hundreds, possibly thousands of people all over the world who have the same struggles.

This person is you, reading this article.

So who is your person?

I want you to write it down. Describe them in as much detail as you can. What’s their story? What are their fears? How can you help them?

When you make videos or write an article, you are only talking to them.

One person.
